THICK-thin Lines EPISODE 05

Jessy took off her big sun glasses, squinting her eyes so she could see properly. She was right. The man she had spotted sitting by himself at the restaurant was G.D Igobasi. She wondered why he was all by himself. She had wanted to ignore but she decided to walk over and sit with him.

G.D recognized her almost immediately. Rolake's friend. She was wearing a mini-skirt suit and high heels. So she was corporate? He had thought she ran her own business like Rolake.

"Hi Ayiba," Jessy smiled, flashing her nice set of teeth. She had a gap, and her deep dimples became visible instantly.

"G.D," He corrected her. He smiled, standing up and shaking her hand. She had come close, about to hug him instead, so there was a bit of awkwardness.

"Oh, I'm sorry..." She smiled again.

"It's alright. I didn't know you were...a banker?" He said, though it was more of a question.

She laughed. "No I'm not. I just love the outfit, and wanted to wear it out."

He shook his head. Unbelievable. Women and clothes.

He pulled a seat for her so she could join him.

"So, what are you doing around here? Do you want some lunch too..." He said, looking around for the waiter.

"Thanks," She said.

Jessy was an interior designer. She had gone to see a client but he had turned down her proposal. She had been sad, and decided to just grab some food. She had left the house early, running up and down, without eating anything so she could meet with the client who had called her, only to be turned down.

The waiter soon brought a serving of pasta and peppered chicken, and placed it by her left hand side, and the drink on her right.

"So, why are you having lunch all by yourself? I know it's a work day, friends?" She said, sipping her drink. She ran her eyes over him to get a fill of his good looks. He looked so nice in his Tan blazer.

"Sometimes you just need to be by yourself, so you can think straight, you know." He replied.

They chatted a little, then he said he had to get back to work. She gave him her business card and then hugged him.

Rolake was in traffic when her phone started to ring. Who else? It was G.D. She hadn't really noticed that they now spoke everyday. It was 6.30pm and she hadn't heard from him all day. Actually she had been really busy getting her stock from her agents so she hadn't really been able to check her phone. When she finally got a chance to, she hadn't seen any calls from him. She had decided not to call him. Especially since she knew how Umi took it.

But then, her phone had started to ring, and it was Ayiba.

She answered the call, using her ear piece.

"Hey you," She said.

"Hey. How are you?" He said. He didn't sound too happy.

"Are you okay? You don't sound like your usual you. What's up?"

"I dunno, but I don't wanna go home, so I'm just at the office, doing nothing. Kema had to be somewhere so I'm by myself."

"Trouble with Mrs. Ayiba?" She asked.

"Well...She's just been really giving me negative energy. She's not saying much and I've asked her what I did wrong but she's just not saying anything."

Rolake sighed.

"Will you come by my house?" She said.

"Okay." He replied.

She got home after some minutes. Jessy was home. They both talked about how horrible their days had gone, and then Rolake went into the kitchen and brought out the vegetable soup she had made in the morning, from the freezer, while she boiled some water in the electric kettle to make Semovita.

"Cook my own abeg," Jessy said, painting her toe nails.

"Better come and make garri or something. Ayiba is coming over and I'm sure he's gonna be starving by the time he gets here." Rolake said, avoiding Jessy's eyes.

Jessy walked over to her friend in the kitchen and stood right in front of her.

"You're cooking for him?" Jessy said.

Rolake shrugged. "Yea. He's upset about something."

"He didn't seem upset when we had lunch today."

Rolake dropped the Semovita on the table immediately and looked at Jessy.

"Lunch?" She asked, like she was upset about it.

Jessy laughed.

"Oh my God. You're jealous!"

"I'm not. I'm just surprised you didn't tell me."

"Rolake Momodu, remembered you told me he is a married man. What are you doing? He has a wife."

"They had a fight i think."

"And you're the best person to solve the problem, yeah?"

Rolake shook her head and started to heat the vegetable soup.

"He's my brother. You won't understand."

Jessy sighed, and then started to walk back to the living room.

"It's wrong to have feelings for your brother sha." She added.

G.D came by their house after some time. He was looking really tired, and his tie was loose, and his sleeves folded.

Jessy had opened the door for him. She started small talk with him as they sat in the living room, while Rolake ran through the back door to take a quick shower and comb her hair. Jessy was confused as to why she had to go dress up. Weren't they supposed to be bffs?

He had hesitated at first, but Rolake forced him to eat. And he was glad he did. She was a great cook! He had missed eating food as good as this since his mother died.
Jessy had excused them.

He talked about how he felt he was walking on egg shells at home with Umi. As he spoke, Umi called him. He had ignored it at first, but then Rolake told him to call her back. She asked what he wanted for dinner. He was upset. She didn't even care to ask how work was, or how he was doing.

"So, let's talk about you, Roxy. Still hearing from Kola?" He asked after they had packed the dishes to the kitchen. He had insisted on staying with her as she washed the dishes. She apologized for washing immediately. She couldn't stand leaving dirty plates for a minute. Umi always washed dinner plates the following morning.

Rolake laughed, shaking her head.

"Kola? Good riddance to bad rubbish." She said.

"Hmm...I'm glad you're growing up, my daughter." He laughed. Rolake punched his arm playfully, careful not to stain his shirt with her wet hands.

"So any new man in the picture? Don't tell me no. Sexy mama like you."

She looked at him, then nodded slowly. She looked shy, and G.D could see that she was shy.

"Heyyy, who's this man making you so shy!" He teased her.

She was silent for a while.

"Well, he is a great guy. A friend. But there's nothing between us yet," She said.

"Where does he work? What does he do?"

"Not telling! I'll let you know in due course. But I am really falling in love with him. It's just that, he's taken. So I don't think it makes sense for me to keep hoping..."

"Awww come here dear," G.D said, pulling her close and hugging her.

As Rolake stayed in his hug, she held on close, wishing he knew that the man she was talking about was him.

She had been in love with him since many years ago, but she hadn't known how to tell him because he always told everyone she was his sister and best friend. She didn't want to be embarrassed, so she had kept it as just friends, but when she had left for the U.S, she had written him a letter with all of her feelings in it. She had given the letter to Kema to give him. But since he never mentioned it, she didn't bring it up either. Maybe Kema never delivered the letter to him.

She had always hoped they would meet again and get married, but somehow, they lost contact.

And when she came back to Nigeria, and met him, her hopes had gone up that night at the bar, till she saw a ring on his fourth finger.

"Thanks for hanging Umi's art work on your wall." He said, looking at the canvass on her wall as they went to the living room.

"I actually love it. I think it's nice."

"Yeah..." He replied, getting his car key. "I should leave now. Thank's so much dear. I appreciate it. Say bye to Jessy for me."

Rolake watched him as he drove off.

"I love you too, Ayiba." She whispered.

Umi watched him as he flung his car key on the table, and took off his shoes. He had only said Hi to her. Maybe she had overreacted with being angry at him. She missed him and just wanted things to be back to the way they had been before Rolake came into the picture. She just didn't understand why he had to be so close to her.

"Ayiba, can we talk?" She started.

"Yeah, sure. It's a free country."

She rolled her eyes.

"I don't know what's going on between us. You no longer..."

"Umi please! I'm tired. I don't want your nagging this night, okay. Just go straight to the point. What have I done?" He said.

Umi tried not to cry. Her husband was becoming different.

"I just want us to be back to who we were. I miss us." She said softly.

"That's because you don't trust me. You think Rolake's an issue but she's not. The issue is you not trusting me enough, and that hurts."

"I trust you and you know that. I just want you to give me some more attention."

He ran his hands over his head.

"I don't give you attention now?"

"Ayiba you did not call me today. You did not even send a text! Till I did."

He walked over to her and kissed her cheeks.

"You have nothing to worry about. Just trust me and you'll be at peace with yourself. Good night."

"Aren't you having dinner?" She asked.

"No, I..." He realised he didn't want to say he had eaten at Rolake's.
"I bought some food before I came home." He lied.

As he shut his eyes, he felt bad. First for lying about dinner, and secondly, because he had been more bothered not hearing from Rolake that day, than he had been about Umi.
